Following the disappointment Sega released in the form of Aliens: Colonial Marines, it would take something pretty special for people to take a Sega published Alien game seriously again. And sure enough, Sega may have that special something in the form of the recently announced Alien: Isolation.
The game is helmed by Total War developers The Creative Assembly (their first console game since 2009’s Stormrise), and as the title suggests, takes place in the world of Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien. The setup for the game is that it takes place fifteen years following the events of Alien, with the player assuming the role of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley, who’s taken after her mother and effectively become a space trucker, working for Weyland-Yutani. After hearing that the flight recorder of the Nostromo has been recovered at a nearby trading station, she and her crew travel there, only to find things aren’t what they seem.
Unlike prior games featuring the Xenomorphs, the game is more in line with the style of horror of Alien and games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent. This means that there’s only one Alien to deal with in the trading station, and instead of engaging it in one on one combat, you’ll have to avoid it. Heck, Amanda doesn’t even have any weaponry – she’s limited to a flashlight, a motion tracker, and a welding torch. Not to mention the game is entirely in first person. The Creative Assembly are also promising that the Alien’s AI is organic, and will be different every time you play the game.
The game is set to be released in Q4 of 2014, for PS3/360/PC/PS4 and Xbox One.
