Roughly a year after the initial release of BioShock: Infinite along with subsequent downloadable expansions, developer Irrational Games is set to disperse after seventeen years within the industry.
Ken Levine explained the decision to wind down the critically acclaimed development team within an announcement made on the Irrational Games website just recently.
Levine’s reasoning includes refocussing and managing a smaller team at Take-Two in order to maintain intimacy with his fellow developers and fans.
“To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience.” Levine disclosed.
“In time we will announce a new endeavour with a new goal: To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.”
Levine also revealed that the fifteen remaining staff of Irrational Games will receive as much support as possible during this transition, including potential employment opportunities with other Take-Two studios. Future BioShock titles will be managed by 2K Games as Irrational Games commence their industry departure.
