SteamOS Announced

Valve has been teasing 3 announcements about the “Living Room” this week, the first of which being SteamOS, A linux based operating system with Valve’s Steam platform at its core for the big screen. With Valve’s recent push behind linux gaming and the potential benefits to more direct hardware access for developers we are told to watch out for “all the AAA titles coming natively to SteamOS in 2014”.

With this announcement Valve has announced new features coming to both the SteamOS and Steam client with in-home game streaming, media services, family sharing and family options allowing parents to select what games are playable in the living room. For the games that are only available on Windows and Mac, SteamOS will be able to stream the game from your Windows/Mac PC to your living room steambox. As for media services, Valve has been “working with many of the media services you know and love” in an effort to bring them to SteamOS and the client.SteamOSgraphic

SteamOS will be free for users to download and as a freely licensable operating system for manufacturers. There are still two more announcements to come, the next to be Thursday morning so keep an eye out for more exciting news.
