So it seems that the current Interplay CEO and entrepreneur Herve Caen is behind the re-opening of one of the industries most famous studios, Black Isle Studios.
A website has popped up with the studios old logo and the below image and it’s not know who, if anybody, from the original incarnation is back at the helm. Chris Avellone tweeted that “I know nothing about the Black Isle Studio news announcement, doesn’t involve me or Obsidian… or well, anyone that I know. ;)” and Obsidian has commented that it doesn’t involve them at all. Brian Fargo, who was formerly of Interplay and is now heading inXile, also tweeted ” “I just read that Interplay is bringing back Black Isle. Hmmm… Not enough info for me to comment.”
Personally, I don’t see the point behind resurrecting the name Black Isle, as the most important names such as Avellone, Urquhart and Sawyer are all currently at Obsidian Entertainment along with a lot of other ex-Black Isle employees.
While at Black Isle Studios, they created some of the most famous and beloved RPGs such as Fallout 2, Icewind Dale 1&2 and Planescape: Torment. Without the talent to go with the name, Black Isle Studios looks to really be an empty shell. Though I am happy to be proven wrong in the future, but I fear that they will only tarnish the name and go the way of the Fallout MMO Interplay had been working on.
